Guildford City Boxing Club’s new home

Boxers from Guildford City Boxing Club resumed full training this week after the summer break in what promises to be the most exciting season in the club’s history.

City, who are believed to be Surrey’s oldest boxing club have recently waved goodbye to their old dilapidated Bellfields base & moved to a purposely refurbished gym in Cabell Road, Park Barn. The move is just a part of many radical changes that will enable the club to continue their staggering success in competition boxing & to hopefully become a focal point for the local community. Other changes include the formation of a new Management Committee charged with administering the club, seeking funding & moving towards Club Mark & charity status. A new boxing committee has also been formed with the appointment of long standing club member & England Boxing judge Kazy Kinden as Chairman & Lewis Byrne as Vice Chairman. Byrne, who has recently retired as a professional boxer & is an inspector for the BBB of C (the professional governing body) has also joined the coaching team where he will team up with long serving coach Arthur McIntosh to coach the senior beginners.

Ben Harmsworth & Paul Goodhand-Tait will renew their successful partnership coaching the junior beginners as both men enter their tenth season as coaches at the club. Ben Harmsworth who passed his England Boxing judges exam last weekend said “All of the new changes are extremely exciting. We have worked very hard for years in difficult conditions with very little help. We are all very enthusiastic & optimistic about the future & I am sure that with the fantastic support that we now have we can push on & become an even bigger asset to the town & local area.”

Boxers Mark Desmond, Rob Deane & Danny Brogan have already resumed training. The trio have been entered in the England Boxing Development Championship (formerly the Novices Championship) which commence on September 12.

City boxer Thomas Kinden from Normandy is preparing for his second professional bout which takes place at The Pyramids in Portsmouth on 20 September. Bantamweight Kinden hopes to continue his unbeaten run as a pro after winning several national schoolboy & junior titles & being part of the GB Boxing Podium squad as an amateur. Tickets are priced at £30 standard & £60 ringside & are available on 07786226684.

City offer boxing training & competition for all. The club welcomes boys & girls from the age of 6 upwards & run sessions for beginners, keep fitters, competition boxers, elite amateur boxers, professional boxers & ladies only sessions. In addition, head coach John Edwards who is a support coach for GB Boxing is available for one to one sessions & tailored group sessions for sports clubs, schools etc.
